Soap is an ABC network sitcom (which was a night-time parody of daytime soap operas) that was created by Susan Harris.
The cast featured actors such as Robert Guillaume (who would go on to star in his own TV show "Benson"), Jimmy Baio, Roscoe Lee Browne, Diana Canova, Billy Crystal, Cathryn Damon, Katherine Helmond (who would go on to star in "Who's The Boss?"), Jay Johnson, Robert Mandan, Dinah Manoff, Arthur Peterson, Donnelly Rhodes, Robert Urich, Jennifer Salt, Sal Viscuso and Ted Wass (who later starred on the NBC series "Blossom").
The series premiered on September 13, 1977 and during its first season, it ranked at #13 in the Nielsen ratings. "Soap" also caused some controversy due to the show's content of sex and infidelity, calling it "raunchy" and the subject matter not suitable for television.
Despite the controversy, the series was nominated for a total of 17 Emmy Awards including "Outstanding Comedy Series."
Robert Guillaume and Richard Mulligan won Emmys respectively for "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series". Cathryn Damon won the Emmy for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series." In 1981, Katherine Helmond won the Golden Globe Award for "Best Performance by An Actress in a TV Series: Musical\Comedy".
On April 20, 1981, "Soap" was cancelled after four seasons and 85 episodes.
